Chinese Culture Day and Chinese New Year
The 7th grade students studied about ancient China in social studies class. As a culminating activity, the students participated in a Chinese Culture Day and celebrated the Chinese New Year (The Year of the Rooster). They learned about traditional clothing, painted Chinese symbols, learned several Chinese words, learned to count in Chinese, made lanterns and a rooster, learned about the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations, and were served Chinese food for lunch.
Our guest speaker was Shan Lu. Shan Lu is a native Chinese speaker with a master’s degree in education and an MBA. She has more than 20 years of teaching and translation experience. In addition to operating her own Chinese school, she has been working as a Chinese language and culture trainer for many companies throughout the country. She has also been a language teacher at the Milwaukee Modern Chinese School and several other community programs in Milwaukee for the past 13 years.
Shan Lu has been the Chinese Language and Cultural Trainer for A.O. Smith Corporation since 2011, working with a group of their executives and professional engineers. Furthermore, the Confucius Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville has identified her as a valuable resource for schools and communities across Wisconsin as a speaker or presenter on Chinese language and cultural awareness. All in all, it was an amazing learning experience for the 7th grade students.
